Heart repair kit takes shape
Stem cell scientists at Harvard University have succeeded in making beating strips of mouse heart muscle cells in a development that could be the prototype of a system to repair damaged human hearts.
“This is the beginning of making heart parts for heart disease,” said Kenneth Chien, leader of the team, whose results appear in the journal Science
on Friday.
Kit Parker, whose laboratory developed the technology that produced a strip of heart muscle from progenitor stem cells, said the best way to visualise the tissue was to think of a Fruit Roll-Up – a popular pressed fruit snack in the US. “We made the meat equivalent of a Roll-Up, except that the meat was alive,” he said.
